Democrats were stunned when Ron DeSantis called on Kamala Harris to spend more time and money in Florida

Aug 5, 2024

There is less than 100 days left until the November 5 election.

Democrats are looking to compete in Florida now that Kamala Harris is the Party’s nominee.

But Democrats were stunned when Ron DeSantis called on Kamala Harris to spend more time and money in Florida.

Florida has always been considered one of the most important states during a Presidential election.

The Sunshine State has more electoral college votes than every other state except for California and Texas.

Of course, Florida has also historically been one of the top swing states in the country.

But after more than six years of Ron DeSantis in the Governor’s Mansion, Florida has shifted from a purple state to a solid red state.

There are now roughly more than one-million registered Republican voters in Florida than there are Democrats.

Democrats held a 300,000-plus registration advantage over Republicans when DeSantis entered office.

Republicans also have a supermajority in the State Legislature.

But Democrats are not giving up on winning Florida.

Party strategists believe the ballot initiatives, recreational cannabis and abortion on demand that are on the ballot, could help drive Democrat turnout and make up for the registration shortfall.

“I think a sleeping giant has been awakened,” Democrat State Senator Shev Jones said in reference to Harris as the nominee.

“Once Ms Harris entered the race, Democrats began organizing fundraisers, prayer breakfasts and other grassroots events with a speed and enthusiasm heretofore unseen in this campaign season,” the Economist reported. “Mr. Shev recalls that he was recently on a phone call planning a cookout for 1,000 black men in Miami who support Ms Harris.”

Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison also encouraged activists to “not sleep on Florida.”

“Don’t count Florida out!” Florida Democrat Chair Nikki Fried added. “We are in a moment.”

On Saturday, Harris supporters held an event at the Villages retirement community.

Roughly 500 golf carts paraded through the Villages in support of Harris on Saturday, which is 200 more than Joe Biden had at his event there in 2020.

But Florida Governor Ron DeSantis believes Democrats are crazy if they think Florida is in play.

That is why he encouraged Harris to spend time and resources in Florida.

“I really hope Harris spends/wastes a lot of time and resources in Florida,” he wrote on X. “We have Floridians who moved to our state to escape the policies of San Francisco Democrats,” he continued. “Implementing those policies nationally under a Harris administration is a non-starter.”

“Kamala has no chance in the Sunshine State,” he added.
