Christian family harassed and reported to authorities by online atheists
Military veterans J.D. and Britney Lott document their travels with their eight kids on social media.
This Christian family of 10 has become the target of harassment by an anti-Christian group on the social media site Reddit.
The Lotts turned an old school bus into an RV and have been traveling across the country on a three-year-long journey while they home-school their kids.
A group on Reddit called FundieSnarkUncensored has gone after the family because they consider them unenlightened Christian fundamentalists.
In April, the Lotts stopped at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park in Florida for a camping trip when things turned dark.
The next day in Georgia they realized they received a text message from the Florida Department of Children and Families (FDCF) after a missed call.
“Please respond we need to follow up and verify the children are safe. If we cannot complete this we will have to see an Order To Take Into Custody which is enforceable nationwide. Please work with us so we do not have to do that. Thank you,” the FDCF wrote.
The Lotts had no idea what was going on.
“It’s like a knife to the heart,” J.D. Lott told Reason.
The family realized that the Reddit group had filed a false complaint against them with the FDCF.
“Turns out it’s an entire group of anti-Christian group – working together – on Reddit who concocted this crazy story about us,” the Lotts said.
One of the Reddit users falsely claimed that their youngest daughter looked like she had “severe jaundice, severe sunburn, and lethargy.”
The caseworker threatened to take their daughter from them if they could not check her out by the end of the day.
Ron DeSantis lowers on the boom on anti-Christian group
The Lotts found an attorney with the help of the Texas Home School Coalition and Family Freedom Project.
An urgent care doctor in Georgia and a local police officer checked out the daughter and found nothing wrong.
It was discovered by looking at the Reddit group that the complaint against the Lotts was lifted word for word from a post.
The users talked about harassing the Lotts and reporting their children.
But they did not count on dealing with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
“Utilizing government entities to make false reports or harass others is unacceptable and will be referred to law enforcement for investigation and ultimately prosecution,” DeSantis communications director Bryan Griffin told The Daily Wire.
The FDCF confirmed the case has been handed over to law enforcement.
“False reports are reported to law enforcement for criminal investigation and prosecution. Filing a false report is a felony with legal consequences, as outlined in 39.205, F.S., and is also a drain on Department resources dedicated to protecting children from abuse and exploitation,” the FDCF said.
Trying to weaponize child services against an innocent Christian family will not fly in the Sunshine State.
