Higher education has become a cesspool of wokeness and indoctrination.
That has put colleges on a collision course with Ron DeSantis.
And woke Florida professors lost their minds after this terrible scheme was shut down.
Florida professors rage over woke indoctrination being banned in the classroom
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is on a mission to make the focus of public colleges in his state education, not indoctrination.
He signed a bill into law in 2023 that banned public colleges and universities in Florida from spending money on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs for students, staff, or faculty.
The law banned required general education courses from teaching “theories that systemic racism, sexism, oppression, and privilege are inherent in the institutions of the United States and were created to maintain social, political, and economic inequities.”
Professors at Florida International University were outraged at the law axing required courses that were woke indoctrination from the school’s curriculum.
Students are still free to take the classes, but they will not count toward the required general education courses needed for a degree.
Without that requirement, students at Florida International have little interest in taking these classes.
Freshman Raul Villegas told the Miami Herald he would not spend money on classes that do not count toward his degree.
“It costs money – paying $200 bucks for a class that ends up not counting sucks,” Villegas said.
“If they don’t count toward general education I don’t have time. I’ve got to focus on my career,” construction management major Eduardo Gonzalez stated. “That’s the reason I’m in the university.”
The only reason some of these woke classes were able to survive is because students at Florida International were required to take them.
Geography professor Kevin Groves called the law an example of “plantation mentality” in Florida that promotes white supremacy.
He whined that the law was censoring history.
“It silences the experiences of violence, harm, suffering, and the resistance to these conditions,” Groves ranted.
Gender studies professor fumes over students not being required to take her classes
Professor Katie Rainwater saw her sociology of gender course get removed as a requirement for general education at Florida International.
“There is a high level of political interference which is deeply troubling,” Rainwater claimed.
English professor Martha Schoolman became concerned that left-wing ideology was being removed from classes after hearing a professor and student discuss the changes to a sociology class.
“Well, this whole enterprise isn’t safe anymore, they don’t care about this being a good school,” Schoolman said. “There is a kind of mentality where anything can be sacrificed in order to comply and there is no point in resisting it. They want to re-shape the whole curriculum, the whole system, in this very conservative image.”
Pointless DEI programs and classes are one of the reasons that the cost of college has surged over the decades.
Florida International removed 12 classes from its general education requirement and revised another 21 to comply with the law.
College students in Florida can now focus on their education instead of being forced to take woke indoctrination and subsidize the careers of left-wing professors.
