Urban Meyer is one of the most successful college football coaches in history.
Fans have wondered if they would ever see him on the sidelines again.
And Urban Meyer made an announcement about his future that surprised fans.
Former ESPN personality claims Urban Meyer is open to returning to Ohio State
Ohio State University Buckeyes head football coach Ryan Day is on the hot seat after he lost for the fourth straight time to the archrival University of Michigan Wolverines.
The Wolverines came into Ohio Stadium as nearly three-touchdown underdogs and missing two of their best players in tight end Colston Loveland and cornerback Will Johnson.
Michigan won the heated rivalry game 13-10 after Ohio State made numerous miscues and was haunted by questionable coaching decisions.
Day has a 1-4 record against Michigan in what is arguably the fiercest rivalry in sports.
Fans and commentators wondered if Day would ever be able to beat Michigan after he was upset by a floundering team undergoing a rebuild.
Speculation about replacing Day centered on former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer who sported a perfect 7-0 record against Michigan and won a national championship during his time in Columbus.
Meyer was Ohio State’s coach after he was suspended for allegedly covering up knowledge of domestic violence allegations against an assistant coach at the beginning of the 2018 season.
He returned to coaching the Buckeyes after a three-game suspension during which Day coached the team.
Meyer retired after the scandal and Ohio State named Day as the program’s next head coach.
Former ESPN personality Jay Crawford, an Ohio native and current local broadcaster in Cleveland, claimed Meyer was open to returning to the Buckeyes.
“Urban never wanted to leave Ohio State,” Crawford said. “His hand was forced, because the administration at the time, did not like how powerful Urban had become at the university. And so there was a real power struggle.”
“Note that the two main players that forced Urban out – and that’s what it was – are gone,” Crawford said about the university president and athletic director.
Urban Meyer puts out a statement about his future
The 60-year-old former Ohio State coach is currently working as a host on Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff.
Meyer last coached in the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2021 season where he was fired after a 2-11 record before the season was finished.
Returning to Ohio State would allow the legendary coach to have a more satisfying conclusion to his decorated career.
Meyer broke his silence about the rumors of returning to coaching with a statement.
“It has come to my attention that there are reports speculating my return to the sidelines in Columbus,” Meyer said. “While I thoroughly enjoyed my seven seasons as head at THE Ohio State University, I have no interest in coaching again. I will always be a Buckeye and have full confidence in Ryan Day, his staff, and every player that puts on the Scarlet and Gray.”
It appears that college football fans may have seen the last of Urban Meyer on the sideline.
