States are going to play a key role in Donald Trump’s mass deportation efforts.
The leash is being taken off local law enforcement.
And Florida sheriffs made one move that left “Border Czar” Tom Homan jumping for joy.
Florida sheriffs will work with ICE and Homeland Security on illegal immigration
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is getting a force multiplier in Florida in its crackdown on illegal immigration.
The Florida Sheriffs Association announced that they would be working with federal authorities to enforce immigration law in the state.
Under 287(g) authority, delegated by ICE to Florida sheriffs, it deputizes them to help ICE enforce federal immigration law.
All 67 Florida counties will have their jails notify ICE every time they receive an illegal alien.
Sheriff’s deputies will be able to help with immigration enforcement in their communities, and correction officers will be able to help in jails.
“So these people are deported and not released back into the community to commit more crimes,” Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said.
Gualtieri recalled an illegal alien from Honduras who had been deported twice and who murdered one of his deputies.
He argued that’s why local law enforcement needs to partner with ICE.
“Because it keeps clearly bad people from getting back on the street where ICE has to spend resources, and we have to help them go find these people,” Gualtieri explained. “It’s also safer for the ICE officers to take these people into custody from the jail.”
Sheriff’s deputies and corrections officers will undergo a brief training program to help them manage their new responsibilities.
Illegal aliens have two choices
One of the challenges in Florida and nationally is detaining illegal aliens until they are deported.
Florida only has 2,000 beds for illegal aliens and all of them are full.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd urged the federal government to increase the number of facilities to detain illegal aliens.
“There is no capacity in the sheriff’s or the county jails of this state to make any negligible difference. We’ve got to have the federal government make capacity,” Judd said. “That’s why we’re here making this statement today, and the federal government knows this. They have to create capacity. We can bring them all the business they can handle and more.”
The reconciliation bill being debated in Congress on border security would include billions of dollars for bed space for illegal aliens.
Judd said that illegal aliens in Florida have two choices.
“It’s time to leave the country,” Judd said. “You can leave by yourself or you can leave in handcuffs.”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said that his state was going to do its part to help Trump carry out his agenda.
“President Trump promised to conduct the largest deportation operation in American history. The fact is, if the state and locals are not fully participating in those efforts, it’s going to be very difficult to achieve that. So Florida, we’ve stood up. We want to be part of the solution. We are going to be there every step of the way,” DeSantis said.
Illegal aliens in Florida will have federal, state, and local law enforcement after them.
