Florida has been leading the charge to crack down on illegal immigration.
The damage it is doing to the state is unfathomable.
And Ron DeSantis was sick when he saw one awful reality about illegal immigration.
Illegal aliens cost Florida at least $660 million in healthcare expenses
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis wants his state to be a leader in helping President Donald Trump with the mass deportation of illegal aliens.
The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration released data showing the staggering healthcare costs for illegal aliens that taxpayers are stuck footing the bill for.
Federal law requires that hospitals treat anyone who comes into an emergency room regardless of their immigration status.
More than 67,000 emergency room trips were made at Florida hospitals by illegal aliens in 2024.
Those trips cost at least $660 million.
Florida’s Medicaid system was on the hook for $76.6 million in payments to hospitals to cover the bills for illegal aliens.
Miami-Dade County, the largest in Florida, saw illegal aliens rack up more than $282 million in expenses.
Florida Agency for Health Care Administration Deputy Secretary Kim Smoak said that data revealed that illegal aliens are creating a burden for the state’s healthcare system.
“The Agency remains dedicated to fulfilling Governor Desantis’ commitment to protecting taxpayer dollars from being used on individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States,” Smoak said. “The data confirms that the financial burden of illegal immigration continues to strain Florida’s health care system. We will continue working to ensure that hospitals and health care providers deliver quality services to U.S. citizens.”
Florida’s data could only be the tip of the iceberg for what illegal immigration is costing the state.
The data did not count illegal aliens who did not report their immigration status during their emergency room visits.
Patients are not required to reveal their immigration status to hospitals when they receive treatment.
