Ron DeSantis wants to go big or go home in one fight.
He is daring to do what no politician has done before.
And Sean Hannity was stunned by one plan from Ron DeSantis that would change everything.
Ron DeSantis has a plan to eliminate the property tax
Florida has one of the lowest tax burdens of any state in the country with no state income tax.
But that is not good enough for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
He has his sights set on one of the worst taxes in the country.
DeSantis proposed phasing out the property tax in Florida to give much-needed relief to homeowners.
The property tax forces someone to continually pay rent to the government for the privilege of owning their home.
Seniors on fixed incomes are hit hard by property taxes as the value of their homes rises, especially in hot real estate markets like Florida.
Florida relies heavily on taxes paid by tourists on rental cars, hotels, and tolls to help fund the state’s government.
DeSantis argued that foreign tourists could pay higher taxes to give Floridians property tax relief during an appearance on Fox News Channel’s Hannity.
“If you ask people, would you rather not have to pay property taxes if that meant that Canadians and Brazilians may pay more hotel tax, I think 100% of Floridians would say that’s a trade that they would want to make,” DeSantis explained.
He has pushed for a ballot initiative for next year that would go before voters about phasing out the state’s property tax.
“If you’re going to tax, I don’t want you taxing Florida residents’ property. Tax the tourists. Tax some of the foreigners,” DeSantis previously said.
Ron DeSantis battles with the state legislature over tax cuts
Eliminating the state’s property tax would be a multiyear process.
DeSantis pushed for immediate relief in the Florida State Legislature with a proposed $1,000 rebate for each homestead property in the state.
He argued this would be the first step toward the eventual elimination of the property tax.
“Property taxes effectively require homeowners to pay rent to the government,” DeSantis stated. “Constitutional protections for Florida homeowners require approval of the voters in 2026. In the meantime, Floridians need relief.”
DeSantis called on the legislature to act in the current session.
“I am today proposing a plan that will result in—on average—$1,000 rebate checks for each homestead as a discount on their property taxes. If the Legislature acts on this plan now, we can get this done this year,” DeSantis added.
Republican leadership in the legislature has butted heads with DeSantis going back to the immigration enforcement bill that passed in February.
DeSantis pushed for a harsher crackdown than lawmakers.
The Florida State House proposed a 0.75% cut to the state’s sales tax, which would bring it down to 5.25%.
DeSantis said that he would support a sales tax cut, but property tax relief needed to be included because he wants tax cuts to help Floridians first.
“They proposed to reduce the state sales tax by three quarters of a penny,” DeSantis said. “It allows relief for foreigners, visitors, part-time residents. I think tax relief needs to be focused on Floridians.”
Florida is looking at more tax cuts either way things shake out.
