New York is a shining example of what not to do as a state.
One blunder is turning them into a national laughingstock.
And a Florida mayor mocked New York Governor Kathy Hochul for one bad decision.
New York City has a crazy new tax on drivers
New York is one of the most heavily taxed states in the entire country.
That does not stop the Democrat controlled state government from trying to wring every last nickel out of residents.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul gave the green light for her state to move forward with a congestion pricing scheme.
Everyone driving into Midtown Manhattan except for government vehicles will be charged a dynamic toll that changes based on the time of day and which day of the week.
New York became the first state in the country to implement this new taxing scheme.
The toll was sold as a way to alleviate congestion on the crowded streets of Manhattan during weekdays.
Drivers during the week from the hours of 5:00 am to 9:00 pm will pay a $9 toll to enter or exit the congestion zone.
That toll drops to $2.50 during the weekend and off-peak hours.
New York is using the money from this tax on drivers to bail out New York City’s subway system.
The Left loves congestion pricing because it is more money for the government, and they believe they can tax people into not driving to stop climate change.
Florida mayor makes a pitch for fed-up New Yorkers
Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer used New York City’s new congestion pricing to recruit fed-up residents of the state to make the move to sunny Florida.
“#NYC commuters are paying another tax just for the privilege of driving on congested roads,” Singer wrote on X. “How many more reasons do you need to move your business to [Boca Raton] where our business climate is as sunny as our real climate with our low tax rate!”
South Florida and Boca Raton are already popular destinations for New Yorkers looking to relocate for a better life and more freedom.
U.S Census Bureau data found that Florida was the top destination for residents of New York who left the state.
Another unpopular tax is going to increase the outbound migration from the state.
New York City residents were already paying nearly 15% in combined state and city income taxes at the top rate.
Florida has no state or local income taxes.
Singer was not the only politician trying to pitch New Yorkers on moving to their state.
New Hampshire State Representative Joe Sweeny (R-NH) tried to get them to make the move north.
“Are you a New Yorker upset about congestion pricing?” Sweeney asked. “New Hampshire 100% Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax, Interest & Dividends Tax, Sales Tax, and Congestion Pricing FREE.”
He had a warning to anyone thinking about packing up their bags and moving to New Hampshire.
“Just leave your voting habits at your New York toll booths,” Sweeny added.
Queens City Council member Bob Holden slammed the congestion tax for driving residents out of the state.
“The government’s job is to make life easier for its residents and businesses, not to drive them away,” Holden stated. “With Tyrant Hochul and the lunatics in Albany pushing policies like the congestion scam tax and crushing businesses with high taxes, it’s no surprise cities like Boca Raton are offering a better deal.”
New York’s residents are voting with their feet in growing numbers to find a better life elsewhere.
