Mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters are some of the toughest dudes on the planet.
But they are still subject to the laws of physics.
And a Florida MMA fighter started one brawl that proved to be the worst move of his life.
MMA fighter killed in a Florida home invasion
Langston Sykes, 31, was a professional fighter with the Island Fights mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion.
He was killed after allegedly being involved in a home invasion in Lake City, Florida.
Lake City Police said that one of the people inside the home had an injunction against Skyes.
Madeline Ault told WCJB that Sykes ex-wife and his five children lived at the home.
Sykes was shot and killed after an apparent defensive use of a gun after he broke into the home.
Emergency medical personnel raced to the scene after someone called 911, but it was too late.
“Officers administered first aid until EMS arrived, but the individual succumbed to his injuries,” the police report stated.
Skyes allegedly charged the group of children and adults in the home when one of the adults “fired multiple shots” that ultimately killed him.
The early investigation by police suggests that the shooting could have been justified.
“Findings from the investigation suggest the case may qualify under Florida’s Stand Your Ground law,” the Lake City Police said.
“This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with everyone affected,” Lake City Police Chief Gerald Butler said in a statement. “Based on the investigation, it appears this may be a case of a resident acting in self-defense during a home invasion. Our detectives are working diligently to gather all the facts to ensure a thorough and complete investigation.”
Florida’s Stand Your Ground law allows individuals to use deadly force if they are in danger without having to retreat.
Friends and family shocked at the tragic outcome
Sykes had a professional MMA record of 1-4 but won his last fight in August via a technical knockout (TKO).
He trained with UFC bantamweight fighter Ramon Taveras, who said anyone “chasing a dream don’t lose it over something or somebody.”
Ault, a friend of Syke’s ex-wife, claimed that he caused problems that forced her to move out.
“In their home that they had together, he was coming in and throwing stuff around or breaking things and causing problems… So, she got her own place,” Ault said. “The fact that it’s had to come to this is just, I don’t know, insane. It’s hard to believe.”
Friends and family had a split view of the situation on social media.
Some said that he was a good friend, while others said that he had a history of violence.
The MMA school where Skyes trained put out a statement mourning his death.
“Langston was not only a fierce competitor and a dedicated teammate, but he was also a great father, a loyal friend, and a man who brought light into every room he entered. His kindness, his laughter, and his unwavering support for those he loved will never be forgotten,” the statement read. “Our hearts go out to his family, especially his five children, who were his greatest pride and joy. We ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
