A woke teacher just learned a tough lesson about parental rights in Ron DeSantis’ Florida

Ron DeSantis vowed to make Florida the place “where woke goes to die.”

But many on the Left think they are above the law.

And a woke teacher just learned a tough lesson about parental rights in Ron DeSantis’ Florida.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was the first Republican to take on the Left’s woke ideology when he signed the STOP Woke Act into law.

The STOP Woke Act banned the teaching of Critical Race Theory and other left-wing propaganda in Florida’s government schools.

DeSantis also signed a bill prohibiting biological males from competing in women’s sports, a bill that made it illegal to perform sex change operations on or give puberty blockers and hormones to children, and a bill that penalizes businesses for allowing kids to attend drag show performances, and restricted the use of woke pronouns in schools.

But it was the Parental Rights in Education Bill that set off a nationwide firestorm.

The Parental Rights in Education Bill banned the teaching of gender and sex to children in kindergarten through third grade.

It also required a signed “Parental Authorization for Deviation from Student’s Legal Name Form” for a student to be called by a name other than their legal one.

Of course, many on the Left think they are special and that the laws do not apply to them.

But Ron DeSantis is a law and order Governor.

And a woke teacher in Brevard County, Florida, just found out that DeSantis means business.

Melissa Calhoun, a teacher at Satellite High School in Brevard County, will not have her contract renewed next year after she called a student by a different name without getting a parental consent form signed.

Calhoun is the first teacher to be fired under the new law.

The teacher allegedly admitted she “knowingly did not comply with the state statute” after the parents of the students reported her.

“BPS supports parents’ rights to be the primary decision-makers in their children’s lives, and Florida law affirms their right to be informed,” Brevard County Public Schools spokesperson Janet Murnaghan said. “At BPS our focus is on education — teachers are here to teach and support students academically,” she continued. “Our job is to work in partnership with parents and guardians to ensure student success.”

“The teacher is working under a ten-month contract that expires in May 2025,” Murnaghan’s statement continued. “Since the state will be reviewing her teaching certificate based on these actions, the district decided not to renew the annual contract until the issue is resolved with the state.”

Calhoun worked for the district since 2013 as an AP Literature teacher.

But Ron DeSantis made parental rights in education a top priority of his administration.

And he continues to show the Left that he means business about making Florida be “where woke goes to die.”
