Senate races are heating up in the final sprint to Election Day.
Democrats are looking to make a last-minute blitz.
And Chuck Schumer went to war with Ron DeSantis after this bad decision.
Bad Senate map forces desperation move from Democrats
The battle for control of the U.S. Senate is shifting after Democrats were hit with bad news in key races.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is clinging to a narrow 51-49 majority heading into Election Day.
Democrats must defend Senate seats in the red states of Montana, Ohio, and West Virginia this year.
Schumer wrote off the West Virginia seat after U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV) decided not to run for re-election.
Democrats are becoming increasingly worried about their chances of winning in Montana and Ohio.
U.S. Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) has not led in a public poll out of Montana since early August.
A recent poll from Napolitan News found that his narrow lead from early August turned into a seven-point deficit.
Winning in a state that former President Donald Trump carried by 16 points in the 2020 Election is a tall task for Tester.
And in Ohio, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) is trying to hang on in a state that voted for Trump by 8 points in 2016 and 2020.
Defying political gravity in those increasingly red states looks grim for Tester and Brown.
Senate Democrats are looking to expand the map with warning signs flashing red in both Montana and Ohio.
Florida and Texas becoming Senate races becoming targets for Democrats
Senate Democrats have a terrible map this election cycle so their only hope to hold onto the majority is going on the offensive in Florida and Texas.
Texas has not elected a Democrat to statewide office since 1994.
And Florida shifted from being the biggest swing state in the country to increasingly red under the leadership of Governor Ron DeSantis.
DeSantis has labeled Florida being competitive for Democrats this year as wishful thinking.
But Democrats are getting desperate in the closing weeks of the election.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) announced that it was making a multi-million dollar ad buy in Florida for former Representative Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D-FL), the state’s Democrat Senate candidate.
She is challenging U.S. Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) who won his first race in 2018 by about 10,000 votes.
Polls have shown Mucarsel-Powell within striking distance but neither side has spent serious money on the race.
The DSCC also announced that they were targeting U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX).
“Senate Democrats are expanding the map and going on offense,” U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), the DSCC chair this cycle, announced. “All cycle long, the DSCC has been preparing to capitalize on Sens. Cruz and Scott’s vulnerable standings in their states—and now, our efforts in Texas and Florida are accelerating.”
Florida and Texas are expensive states to advertise in because of their size.
If Senate Democrats really thought those races were competitive, they would have been spending earlier in the cycle.
National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesman Philip Letsou said that targeting Florida and Texas was a sign of desperation.
Letsou said the decision was “effectively an admission from Chuck Schumer and the DSCC that Jon Tester, who is polling very badly, looks like a lost cause.”
