Taxpayers fund union work by government employees
The federal government and public employee unions have a cozy relationship.
One of the biggest scams in the Washington, D.C., Swamp is what is known as official time, a giveaway to public employee unions courtesy of the American taxpayer.
Government employees are doing union work while they are paid by taxpayers, during job hours, and in government buildings.
Official time gives public employee unions free labor provided by taxpayers.
Public employee unions pour hundreds of millions of dollars into Democrat candidates and causes every election cycle.
So Democrats take care of their political allies once they are in office.
Former President Joe Biden removed all the reporting requirements for official time for government employees.
Representative Scott Franklin (R-FL) introduced a bill to require government agencies to disclose how much they are spending on official time during normal work hours.
A 2019 report from the Office of Personnel Management found that official time cost taxpayers at least $160 million.
Franklin’s Taxpayer-Funded Union Time Transparency Act would require agencies to report the cost of official time, what union work these employees are doing, and the costs to the government in office space, travel, and supplies charged by employees doing union work.
No one has any idea what union work these government employees are doing on the taxpayers’ dime.
U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) discovered that one government employee claimed official time while he was serving a jail sentence for a drunk driving arrest.
It has long been suspected that political activity, like get-out-the-vote operations, is being done by government employees on official time.
Democrats do not want taxpayers to know how their money is being spent
Every Democrat member of Congress opposes transparency for official time.
They fear the backlash if this scam had greater awareness among the public.
“Taxpayers shouldn’t pay for empty federal office buildings or for federal employees to unionize on the clock. It’s just common sense — Americans deserve a full, detailed account of how bureaucrats use both their official time and office space for union-related work,” Franklin said.
President Donald Trump reinstated the reporting requirements for official time, but once a Democrat takes office again, they will be removed.
Franklin’s bill makes these reporting requirements mandatory under every administration.
“The President was right to order federal employees back to the office —but if taxpayers are footing the bill, workers must be accountable for how they spend their official time. Our bill will provide critical transparency and expose entrenched bureaucrats who have been skirting these important reporting requirements for far too long,” Franklin explained.
An employee at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission made $171,469 a year while spending 99.5% of his time on the clock working on union activities.
No one has any idea what he did on the job.
Official time is one of the biggest scams in the Swamp that Democrats and public employee unions hope the public never learns about.
