Middle Eastern man attacks an energy facility in Florida
The threat of terrorism inside the country has soared because of the border crisis under President Joe Biden and the conflict in the Middle East between Israel and Hamas.
FBI Director Chris Wray warned a Senate committee in January that his agency was on high alert for a potential terrorist attack.
“Even before October 7, I would have told this committee that we were at a heightened threat level from a terrorism perspective — in the sense that it’s the first time I’ve seen in a long, long time,” Wray said. “The threats from homegrown violent extremists that is jihadist-inspired, extremists, domestic violent extremists, foreign terrorist organizations, and state-sponsored terrorist organizations all being elevated at one time since October 7, though, that threat has gone to a whole other level. And so, this is a time I think for much greater vigilance, maybe been called upon us.”
A Jordanian citizen was arrested in Florida for attacking solar panels and making threats against America.
Hashem Younis Hashem Hnaihen, a Jordanian national residing in Orlando, was arrested for four counts of threatening to use explosives and destroying an energy facility.
Starting last year, he began attacking Orlando businesses that he believed to be friendly to the nation of Israel in the middle of the night while wearing a mask.
Hnaihen would smash a window or a door to leave a threatening note addressed to the United States government.
The notes had a series of political demands for the government about the Middle East.
Solar power facility damaged in a terrorist attack
Hnaihen would leave notes that threatened “destroy or explode everything here in whole America. Especially the companies and factories that support the racist state of Israel.”
He took things to the next level when he launched an assault on a solar power facility in Wedgefield, Florida.
That night he destroyed solar panels, electronic equipment, and cut wires for a total of $700,000 worth of damage.
FBI agents worked with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Orlando Police, and other local law enforcement agencies to finally arrest him.
Hnaihen faces 10 years in a federal prison for each charge of threatening to use explosives and 20 years for destroying an energy facility.
“Under the guise of expressing his beliefs, the defendant allegedly attacked a power facility and threatened local businesses, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages,” FBI Director Christopher Wray said. “Violence and destruction of property to threaten and intimidate others will never be tolerated. The FBI and our partners will work together to pursue and hold accountable those who resort to violence.”
