Biden’s Treasury Department targets law against protecting conservatives
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has been leading the charge to protect consumers from being politically targeted by the financial system.
The Sunshine State banned banks and other financial companies from establishing Chinese-style social credit systems that can restrict customer purchases for political reasons.
Florida has also passed laws to prevent customers from being de-banked, having accounts shut down for political reasons.
Department of Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson wrote a letter to Representative Brad Sherman (D-CA) warning that Florida’s protecting conservatives from the financial system undermines efforts to stop terrorists and money laundering.
“State laws interfering with financial institutions’ ability to comply with national security requirements heighten the risk that international drug traffickers, transnational organized criminals, terrorists, and corrupt foreign officials will use the U.S. financial system to launder money, evade sanctions and threaten our national security,” Nelson wrote.
Florida fires back at the Treasury Department
Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody (R) and 19 other Republican state attorneys general sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen slamming the department for its political activism in opposing Florida’s law.
“The Biden-Harris administration has pursued a radical agenda since its inception. From open borders to targeting gas stoves and washing machines, they are now attempting to use the Treasury Department to label states, which seek to protect their citizens from unjustified de-banking, as national security threats. This is merely another effort to use federal power to advance the administration’s destabilizing activist agenda,” Moody wrote.
The letter accused the Treasury Department of “fear-mongering” and causing “confusion” about Florida’s laws.
“It is even more disappointing that the Treasury Department would use ‘national security’ as cover for large banks’ abuse of power to achieve those ends,” the letter stated.
The letter pointed to Florida House Bill 989 which protects consumers and organizations like religious institutions, firearms manufacturers, and the fossil fuel industry from discrimination from having their financial services affected because of their political or religious beliefs.
“No consumer or business should be denied services based on political beliefs or religious views or because of some arbitrary social credit score derived from ideological agendas,” the letter added.
“The [Treasury] letter deliberately misleads financial institutions about state laws, such as Florida’s HB 989, falsely suggesting that these laws would prevent financial institutions from considering whether a consumer is associated with designated terrorist groups. In reality, laws like HB 989 ensure financial institutions focus on true risk-based factors and avoid enforcing radical social policies,” the attorneys general added.
States are finally fighting back against the weaponization of the financial system against them.
Now, the Biden administration is trying to squash any pushback by falsely labeling it as a national security threat.
