The Miami Hurricanes have been one of the surprises of this college football season.
But they have dealt with some obstacles during their march toward the playoffs.
And Miami Hurricanes players had to overcome this sick fan behavior at a road game.
Miami Hurricanes survived a wild trip to Berkeley for a game with Cal
The University of Miami Hurricanes football team has had a return to national prominence this season.
Led by Heisman Trophy-contending quarterback Cam Ward the team has gone 7-1 and is contending for a spot in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) title game and a berth in the College Football Playoff.
The Hurricanes have had some late-game heroics and lucky breaks this season.
Conference realignment has created coast-to-coast conferences that ignore the old rules of geography that used to govern college conferences.
Miami traveled more than 3,000 miles for an early October game against the Cal Golden Bears in Berkeley, California in what may have been the longest distance ever traveled in college history for a conference game.
ESPN’s College Game Day came to town in what was one of the biggest games for the Golden Bears in recent memory.
Miami got off to a sluggish start in the game and found themselves trailing 35 to 10 in the third quarter.
The Hurricanes managed to outscore the Golden Bears 29-3 the rest of the way.
Ward threw a touchdown pass to tight end Elijah Arroyo with 26 seconds left to complete the comeback with a 39 to 38 victory.
Berkeley is famous for being one of the most left-wing college campuses in the country.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis revealed that the Hurricanes football players had to deal with Cal fans smoking marijuana in the stadium during the game.
“Some of these guys are telling me like they practically got high just from being in the stadium, that literally the whole stadium just reeks of marijuana,” DeSantis.
He made the remarks during an event opposing the ballot measure Amendment 3 which would have legalized recreational marijuana in Florida.
DeSantis previously credited Miami beating Cal as a victory in the war on woke.
“The one thing I can say, Florida State, you know, unfortunately, they’ve only won one game and they beat Cal Berkeley,” DeSantis joked. “Miami also beat Cal Berkeley. So whatever they say about the state of Florida, we say we are still winning the war on woke.”
Florida voters reject recreational marijuana on the ballot
One of the biggest political fights in Florida along with a constitutional amendment that would have enshrined abortion on demand into the state constitution was a ballot measure legalizing recreational marijuana.
Both measures failed to pass on the ballot with Florida voters in this election.
DeSantis made the argument that like Cal’s football stadium marijuana would be everywhere it was legalized recreationally.
“I’ve gone to some of these cities that have had this everywhere, it smells, there’s all these things,” DeSantis said. “I don’t want to be able to go walk in front of shops and have this. I don’t want every hotel to really smell.”
Because the voters of Florida defeated legalizing marijuana, football teams in Florida will avoid a situation like Miami ran into when they traveled to Berkeley.
