Chinese students caught illegally shipping drugs to China
Chinese has been quietly building influence in the United States through college campuses across the country.
Public colleges and universities love to recruit international students from China because they pay a higher international tuition rate without the use of federal financial aid.
China has the most international students at American colleges and universities, with more than 300,000 of their citizens studying in the United States.
With the presence of so many Chinese students, it has opened the door for the Communist Chinese Party (CCP) to gain influence on campuses.
The Justice Department recently busted an alarming operation smuggling drugs and toxins back to China on the University of Florida’s campus.
“A University of Florida research employee and students have been implicated in an illegal, multi-million dollar scheme investigated by the Justice Department to fraudulently buy thousands of biochemical samples of dangerous drugs and toxins that were delivered to a campus laboratory then illicitly shipped to China over seven years, according to federal court records,” The Associated Press reported.
One of the students implicated, Nongnong “Leticia” Zheng, was the President of the University of Florida’s Chinese Students and Scholars Association.
That group protested a bill signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis that restricted colleges from recruiting Chinese students and faculty.
And it banned Chinese students from working in labs without authorization.
Zheng’s group labeled the DeSantis’ bill “nationality-based discrimination” when it was passed.
Justice Department officials claimed the smuggling ring sent biological precursors to cholera and whooping cough to China.
Research samples of fentanyl, morphine, MDMA, cocaine, ketamine, codeine, methamphetamine, amphetamine, acetyl morphine, and methadone were also shipped.
Millions of dollars worth of these drugs and biological agents were shipped back to China before the scheme finally unraveled.
A company selling the drugs noticed a suspicious paperwork error and reported it to the Justice Department.
Zheng whined and claimed to be an innocent victim in the matter to reporters.
Ron DeSantis vindicated for cracking down on Chinese influence on college campuses
China has used Confucius Institutes, educational centers that claim to promote Chinese culture, as front groups from the CCP on college campuses.
The Chinese use colleges to try and steal secrets, and for espionage in the United States.
DeSantis signed two major bills in 2021 designed to curb Chinese influence in Florida.
In addition to restricting Chinese students and faculty, Florida colleges were banned from entering research partnerships with Chinese universities, and are now required to publicly disclose large donations of more than $50,000 from China.
“There is no single entity that exercises a more pervasive, nefarious influence across a wide range of American industries and institutions than the Communist Party of China,” DeSantis said at the time.
China is trying to take advantage of American’s freedom and open society for the CCP’s gain.
