Tom Brady retired from the NFL for the final time after the 2022 season.
But his legendary playing career is still a topic of conversation.
And Tom Brady dropped the hammer on this quarterback who criticized his game.
Tom Brady’s replacement in Tampa makes eye-opening comment
Legendary quarterback Tom Brady left the New England Patriots after 20 years to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after the 2019 NFL season.
Brady spent the final three years of his career in Tamp before he retired.
The future Hall of Fame quarterback led the Buccaneers to the franchise’s second Super Bowl during his first season with the team.
Brady was one of the most competitive players in NFL history.
He brought a demanding leadership style to Tampa after collaborating with no-nonsense Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
Current Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, who replaced Brady as the team’s starter, revealed that not everyone in the locker room was a fan of the legendary quarterback’s hard-charging style.
Mayfield told the Casa De Klub podcast that players were stressed out from dealing with Brady.
“The building was a little bit different with Tom in there,” Mayfield said. “Obviously, playing-wise, Tom is different. He had everybody dialed in, high-strung environment, so I think everybody was pretty stressed out.”
He revealed that he brought a laidback personality to the Buccaneers locker room when he came in to fill Brady’s shoes.
“They wanted me to come in, be myself, bring the joy back to football for guys who weren’t having as much fun,” Mayfield explained.
Tom Brady responds to Baker Mayfield’s comments
Brady worked the week four NFL game between the Buccaneers and the Philadelphia Eagles from the broadcast booth with Fox.
He said during the game he would have gone to Disney with his kids if he had been looking for fun in Florida.
Brady read Mayfield’s remarks during the broadcast.
“I thought stressful was not having Super Bowl rings,” Brady quipped. “There was a mindset of a champion that I took to work every day. This wasn’t daycare. If I wanted to have fun, I was gonna go to Disneyland with my kids.”
The 47-year-old former quarterback said that he pushed his teammates so they could achieve their best.
“There’s a way to approach this game and it’s with the right mindset to try to push each other outside of our comfort zones and great teammates do that. I come in, I have someone like (Rob) Gronkowski, I have someone like (Mike) Evans. There’s high expectations for us, we got to make sure we go out there and deliver,” Brady said.
Brady did not appear to be offended by Mayfield’s comments.
The pair were seen embracing before the week 4 game.
Mayfield told ESPN later that his remarks were taken out of context.
“I think a lot of that got taken out of context, and none of it was personal by any means,” Mayfield said. “It’s just what he demanded of the guys, and that’s the aura of Tom Brady. And that’s what he did to bring a championship here.”
“Nothing personal, but yeah, talking before the game, he’s obviously happy for me and he knows the guys, so he knows how much I enjoy throwing to Mike (Evans) and Chris (Godwin) (because) he got to do the same,” Mayfield continued. “It’s fun to be able to talk about the same experience with a guy like that.”
The players who played with Tom Brady will always remember his drive and determination.
